....Make orange juice and leave people wondering how you did it!
But honestly! Wedding planner's motto: when things don't go as planned, take what ya got and roll with it!
Perfect example of this was what supposed to be my first styled shoot in Joshua Tree. I couldn't have been more excited about it! It wasn't going to be a huge production because Joshua Tree is beautiful by itself and we wanted to make it more of an elopement look. With that being said...
I had connected with Carmen Zajfert of Giovanni and Carmen Photography, from Germany, through a Facebook page for styled shoots (big thanks to Styled Shoots Across America). Her and her husband, Giovanni, and her parents were doing a big long West Coast trip and wanted to plan a styled shoot for Joshua Tree.
I had found and connected with France from La Fleur lu France, who was working with Laura from Blue Bell Florals at the time. They were both on board with providing florals for the shoot, especially since they were doing a wedding around the same time with a similar color palette.
The day of the shoot came and my boyfriend, Teegan, had come with to help with set up/tear down, and we wanted to make an adventure out of Joshua Tree since neither of us had been! We arrived at Carmen and Giovanni's AirBnb and instantly fell in love with them! They greeted us outside our car and warmly welcomed us in.

Anywho, we had some time to kill before our models were scheduled to arrive so we sat down and got to know each other. We talked about everything under sun until we found out that our models were going to be two hours late, right as the sun was supposed to set. Carmen and I had a quick panic attack because we needed to shoot since we drove 3 hours to get there, we had promised photos to the florists and we had a dress from a designer in Germany who we promised photos to as well.
So....I slipped into the dress! In a whim, I had the dress on, which was two feet too long on me considering I'm 5'1. And Teegan because he's, well, Teegan, came in t-shirt, shorts and flip flops. So, Giovanni, who is about 6 feet and probably a size 36 waist, lent Teegan, who is 5'8 and a 30 waist, some clothes to wear for the shoot. The only thing that fit Teegan properly were Giovanni's shoes and that's because Teegan has HUGE feet, ha!
We took off to go gallivant in the dessert in our massive clothes and take some pictures!
Soon as we found a spot, Giovanni says, "Okay stand there and I'm going to shoot you from here." Immediately Carmen jumped on him for saying that with "No, no, no you can't say that here! Shoot means with a gun! No guns!" We all got a good laugh out of it and we let Carmen know that we knew what he was referring to and it was no big deal! "It's okay to shoot in regards to photography, we gotcha."
We had a blast and laughed our way through the session, as you can see. The whole situation was hilarious and ridiculously fun!
Okay so the story behind these pictures is one of my favorites parts about the day. We headed towards the dirt road for some pics and Carmen wanted us to chase each other. Whilst running and laughing, a car drove by and kicked up some dust and Carmen and Giovanni ATE THAT UP so they promptly yelled at us to run again while the dust was in the air. She didn't get all the pictures she wanted so Giovanni sprints to his car and revs his engine to kick up even more dust, and we again, chased each other down the road.
At the end of the day, we were all pretty happy things didn't go exactly as according to plan because we had so much fun together! After the sun went down, we headed back to the AirBnb and changed back to our normal clothes and chatted with Giovanni and Carmen before we left. We were so thankful we all met and look forward to working together again. If we ever get to Germany, they offered us a rad place to stay with them. Those are the kind of people I want to work with and befriend!
So any brides in Europe or want to get married in Europe...I know some people! ;)
